Healing Journey: What Can Happen If Someone Believes That Their Thoughts Create Their Feelings?

If someone's inner world is not in a good way, they could simply tolerate what is going on and not do anything about it. Then again, they could end up looking for a way to change their life.
When it comes to what is taking place inside them, they could find that their thoughts and feelings are often out of control. Being at peace and feeling good could be a massive challenge, with it being normal for them to feel edgy and bad.
The Main Focus
At this stage of their life, it could be a complete mystery as to why they are the way that they are. This could be the last thing on their mind, though, as their main priority could be to change their life.
Going into what the cause is of what is taking place inside them could be seen as a total waste of time too. Finding a way to move forward is then going to be the only thing interests.
Reaching Out
If they were to pay a visit to their doctor, they could end up being referred to a counsellor or a cognitive behavioural therapist. That is, of course, if they are given this opportunity and are not simply offered medication.
Alternatively, one could decide to look for answers online, with there being no shortage of advice on what they can do. Nonetheless, regardless of the route they take, they can end up coming to the same conclusion.
It's all About the Mind
They could be told by one person or a number of sources online, that their thoughts are the reason why their inner world is the way that it is. What this will also mean is that their feelings are a consequence of the thoughts that they have.
With this in mind, the way for them to change their inner world will be for them to gain control of their thoughts and to start changing their 'negative' thoughts to 'positive' thoughts. This is then similar to how replacing unhealthy foods with healthy foods should allow one to function better.
Being Mindful
Naturally, in order for this to take place; it will be essential for one to be aware of what is taking place inside them. Obviously, this is not going to take place over night; it will be a lifelong process.
Still, the sooner one starts, the sooner they will start to develop an awareness of what is taking place inside them. The first step can be for them to simply notice when they have a 'negative' thought and not to get caught up in this thought, and they could even replace it with a 'positive' thought.
A Smooth Process
After they have been putting in the work for a few weeks/months, they may start to notice that there has been an internal shift. Their thoughts will have improved and this means that their feelings will also have improved.
At this point, one could feel very fortunate that they have been able to move on from the inner pain that they once experienced. And, as this approach has worked for them, they could see it as an approach that will work for everything.
A Different Experience
On the other hand, one could try this approach only to find that their inner world hasn't really changed. If this is the case, they could believe that they are doing it wrong, and they could even believe that there must be something wrong with them.
It could be said that it won't be much of a surprise if they come to these conclusions, as so much of the therapeutic and the self-development world believes that its 'all about the mind' and that one's 'thoughts create their feelings'.
A Half-Truth
One way of looking at this would be to say that this is the result of having a 'mind centred' outlook, which is certainly a result of living in a 'mind centred' society. What this then does is prevents someone from being able to acknowledge that it is not purely about what is going on 'up top'.
Undoubtedly, someone's thoughts can create how they feel; the other side of this is that their thoughts can trigger feelings that are already inside them. Not only this, their thoughts can serve as a defence mechanism to keep how they feel at bay.
Two Parts
When it comes to the thoughts that someone has, these can be seen as coming from their mental body, whereas their feelings can be seen as coming from their emotional body. The area of their being where their thoughts come from is like the tip of the iceberg, while the area where their feelings come from is like the part that is far bigger but invisible.
Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroanatomist, explains how much of a difference there is, "although many of us may think of ourselves as thinking creatures that feel, biologically we are feeling creatures that think". Therefore, if one has tried to change how they feel by changing their thoughts and this approach hasn't worked, they will know why.
Going Deeper
When this is understood, there will be no reason for them to think that they are doing something wrong or that there is something inherently wrong with them. They will be able to see that they are using the wrong tool for the job.
If their body is loaded up with trauma, playing around with their thoughts will be a total waste of time. Once they deal with this trauma, they may find that they feel different and that their thoughts settle down.
The Body Doesn't Forget
When it comes to the trauma that they may be carrying, this will relate to the moments in their life when they felt overwhelmed and were unable to integrate what took place. If they experienced trauma during their childhood years and/or at their birth, their conscious mind might not remember what took place.
The endless activity in their mind, with all their 'negative' thoughts and even so-called 'irrational' fears, will be a sign that, deep down, they are carrying wounds that need to be acknowledged. Once these are dealt with, there might be no reason for their mind to be all over the place.
Awareness
รข€‹
If one can relate to this, and they are ready to change their life, they may need to reach out for external support. This is something that can take place with the assistance of a therapist or a healer.

We Can Do This

As we all struggle with the medical, social and emotional implications of this pandemic, I wanted to reach out and share some thoughts that might be of some assistance in terms of coping and comfort.
First, you are not alone in this. It's easy to say, but not always easy to accept especially after a considerable period of time has passed. Trust me that at some point you are going to start to feel like you're the only one "suffering". In reality, you have an entire network of family, friends and even colleagues that are or will soon be feeling this way. Given the multiple facets of technology, we can more easily stay in touch with people than ever before. And while you might not be able to physically be there a phone call, text, email, Facebook shout-out can go a long way to helping yourself and someone else. So reach out and connect via technology. In addition to your normal circle of BFFs, I'm sure there is a long thought about friend or relative, former classmate, retired colleague or even a personal coach who would love to hear from you. The expression that misery likes company is currently on display in real terms. Staying in touch is the best way to validate that we're not alone.
Second, it's human nature to think about all that we have lost (even temporarily) rather than all that we have. This feeling will become increasingly acute as people are furloughed from their jobs, struggle financially and/or confront this disease on a personal level. It is now that we need to take stock of all our blessings no matter how large or small and be thankful of their existence. The saying that we never "realize what we had until it is gone" tends to ring true in situations like the one we are all facing. So I encourage you to take inventory of what you have, preserve and protect to the best of your ability and cherish each for what it has or will mean to you going forward. It will prove to be a source of great strength now and later down the road.
Third, you might have heard about the concept, Sphere of Control. In a nutshell, it talks about not wasting our resources around those things that are out of our control. Again, one of those concepts that is easy to understand but difficult to apply. Yet it is critical for all of us to keep focused on what we can control (attitudes, beliefs, interactions with others, precautionary steps, etc.) so as not to waste two of our most precious commodities... time and energy. Since we don't really know where this is all going, our immediate future is highly dependent on our ability to stay in the present and not get distracted and dragged down by things beyond our control.
Finally, I want to reiterate just how special we are to each other. We are a community of people who care. We can conquer this situation by sticking together, helping one another and being smart in our personal and professional interactions.
My best wishes for your health, safety and comfort going forward!
John J. Meggiolaro
